Paul Jr. had been a part of the process from a very young age, working, watching and absorbing all he could about the particulars of the produce business. By the time he finished high school, Paul Jr. was confident his father had prepared him well to carry on the family name at the West Side Market, and he did so until 2003.
In the early summer of 2006, having never lost their entrepreneur’s spirit, the Chuppa’s came across the “perfect place for an open air market.” The entire family came to investigate the site of the old Carolyn’s Restaurant on Pearl Road. Dad shared his vision for the market layout, describing where he thought the apples should be displayed, the best location for the specialty cheese island, the deli...everything. His enthusiasm was contagious. Father and son still jokingly argue about who really envisioned the idea first. But they both readily agree that Chuppa’s Marketplace became a reality thanks to the help of a lot of dedicated people.
